Cassandra Estella Roland was born in Harlem NY May 3 1951, but moved to Brooklyn before she was one years old. As a kid, she taught herself the fundamentals of basketball and quickly excelled in it. She played in high school and street courts as a young adult. Upon her junior year of high school, she was offered athletic scholarships by out-of-state colleges, but ultimately chose to stay closer to home and pursue her passion.Sandra, as many referred to her, worked in Head Start programs from 1968 to 1973. In the early 1980’s, she created Hoop Connection and in the latter part of the decade, formed the United Brooklyn Basketball Association. Her teams also competed in various tournaments throughout the city. For many kids, it was their first time playing outside of the neighborhood. Her programs inspired generations, as her “alumni” would bring their sons and nephews, continuing her legacy. She used her love of sports to motivate people both on and off the court. One of the most important aspects of her programs was the “books before ball” rule. Realizing the challenges some parents faced keeping their kids engaged, she often worked alongside them, teachers and guidance counselors to ensure education was the priority. At the recommendation of some parents, she visited schools to further reenforce structure, vital to a child’s success.Sandra gave opportunity to all children including those who required more attention but remained dedicated. Love, respect, discipline, hard work and fun were all key elements of her programs. Her toughness and nurturing, provided the confidence and preparation many needed to enter society as upstanding citizens. A handful of her players, now adults, have coached high school and college teams. Some have even organized youth basketball leagues of their own. Apparently, the “Hoop Connection” is still thriving.
